The Douro Valley is the terraced wine country east of Porto, where vineyards descend in steps to the river and the villages — Cinfães, Baião, Lamego, Pinhão — sit on the slopes above. It is the world's oldest demarcated wine region, and one of the slowest landscapes in Iberia: a ride upriver on a rabelo, a long port lunch on a quinta veranda, the late golden light off the slate-roofed villages. Portugal's most distinctly slow-coded interior, and a real alternative to the coast.
