Western Crete.

Western Crete is the slower half of the island — Chania's Venetian harbour, the gorges and white-washed villages of Apokoronas and Sfakia, and the long beaches of the south coast. The Old Town of Chania remains one of the Mediterranean's most lived-in port quarters; inland, the villages of the Akrotiri and Apokoronas peninsulas keep their tavernas, their olive presses, their afternoon stillness. This is calmcation Crete: not Heraklion's resorts, but the older, quieter west — the side that built the island's reputation for slow Cretan summers.
